Top 15 Mixtapes of 2010
At the beginning of 2010, I gave you a list of 10 emcees to keep an eye on. I must say I was correct on most of those. Well, 2010 just ended, and now I’m going to give a list of what my favorite projects were. Enter this article with an open mind, and listen to something new today. Enjoy!
Wiz Khalifa – Kush & OJ
The first project I’m going to start with is an obvious one. Wiz Khalifa undoubtedly ran 2010 by releasing tons of new music, smoking tons of ganja, and well, just being himself. Kush & OJ had the internet in a frenzy when it first dropped, and after a couple listens you can see why. Not only did it have your pot-smoker friends jammin’. Gangsters, frat boys, and a whole litter of different people were bobbin’ their heads to it as well.
Gilbere Forte – 87 Dreams
An artist that I just came across for the first time this year was Gilbere Forte. With that being the case, I still listened to 87 Dreams more than any other album/mixtape/EP in 2010. For me, a good mix of R&B, as well as Hip-Hop, is a good way to keep the listener wanting more.
Christian Rich – The Decadence
Sometimes I take an eenie meenie miney mo approach when it comes to finding new music. Christian Rich is actually an artist that I found using that method, and I couldn’t have been happier when I came across The Decadence. Definitely different from what I usually listen to, but it’s got some heavy rotation in my iTunes.
The Cool Kids – Tacklebox
Much like everything The Cool Kids do, Tacklebox had me banging my head non-stop. This is one of those projects that you can throw in the ride and just cruise around town with your stereo as loud as it goes. Crazy beats, clever lyrics, this duo always seems to deliver.
Casey Veggies – Sleeping In Class
I’m going to take you back to the west coast for this one. Hip-hop youngster, Casey Veggies, has a bright future ahead of him. Sleeping In Class was probably my most-anticipated project in 2010, and he made us wait until near the end of the year. I must say it was well worth the wait though. Great production throughout, and Veggies impresses lyrically as well.

The Illz – In Between Video Series
There’s not too many people that impressed me more than The ILLZ last year. After an amazing project in 2009, I didn’t know how he was going to top it. Well, he shot a total of 7 music videos, and dropped a mixtape to go along with the videos. Will always be one of my favorite artists.

Das Racist – Sit Down, Man
This was a project that took me awhile to check out because I just wasn’t sure what to expect. A little after it’s release, I downloaded it, and have thoroughly enjoyed it sense. Definitely a very fun project that finds a way to make you move.
Mac Miller – K.I.D.S.
Another guy that had a pretty big year in 2010 was Mac Miller. This one’s in my top 5 from ’10. A lot of dope music videos dropped to go along with the mixtape. Believe it or not, this one’s not all about weed though. It does maintain a very laid-back, fun sound, but a there’s still a little more too it.
Dom Kennedy – From The Westside, With Love
The west coast holds some of my favorite current hip-hop artists, and Dom Kennedy could possibly be my favorite period. His 4th mixtape released, and it contains gem after gem. Another one to just throw in and vibe out. Can’t say enough about this project.

Jabee – Lucky Me
A very recent release, but one of my favorite for multiple reasons. Long-time Sneakhype friend Stik Figa is on the track titled Jewels, one of the best tracks on the project. It’s one of those projects that from the moment you press play, you don’t ever have to hit next. Those two reasons give me reason enough to include it.
GhostWridah -In Love With My Future
Original production is always a huge plus in my book. I don’t really like mixtapes because of people using other people’s beats, so on & so forth. When I got to download this full-length album from GhostWridah with all original production, I was extremely happy. Florida-native, and reps it well.

Tyler, The Creator – Bastard
This is easily the weirdest project on this list, but one of my favorites. Very dark & twisted thoughts throughout, not necessarily going to be for everyone. If you’re feeling crazy, definitely give it a listen. If you’re not familiar with Odd Future just yet, you might want to google them as well. Crazy guys that put on a hell of a show.
J. Cole – Friday Night Lights
An artist that I feel has done no wrong in the mixtape game is none other than my man, J. Cole. I don’t think he’s the greatest rapper in the world, but he does make some damn good music. Production is on point, and Cole doesn’t disappoint on the lyrical tip. A must-have in my opinion.

MeLo-X – More Merch
An artist that always seems to be breaking barriers, and making dope music at the same time, has got to be MeLo-X. Thanks to Theophilus London, I came across this artist right around a year & a half ago. You might need an open mind going into this one, but it’s very well worth the listen.
Kanye West – G.O.O.D. Fridays
Last, but most certainly not least, is none other than Mr. Kanye West. His weekly G.O.O.D. Friday tracks brought joy to pretty much every hip-hop fan across the world. Nothing beats quality, and if you can bring quantity into the picture without sacrificing the quality, you’re golden.
